I'm a recent graduate of Michigan State University, earning a degree in journalism with minors in graphic design, public relations and leadership in integrated learning.
Covering education in Petoskey and surrounding areas. Writing daily stories as well as long form enterprise content. Assists with copy editing. Covering Petoskey, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Gaylord, Harbor Springs, Pellston and other neighboring communities.
Covered Michigan-focused stories during an eight-week-long internship. Wrote both daily stories as well as longer form enterprise work. Wrote a story bringing in more than 23,000 users, making it the highest traffic story of the month. Localized national news stories while assisting other reporters in sourcing.
Managed an 18-time Pacemaker award winning newsroom. Led 50 staff members, ensuring daily content was added to the website while producing a bi-weekly print product. Managed and tracked analytics on social media and on the website. Report to the organization’s Board of Directors. Trained the next university student-journalists. Implemented and managed a freelance pool. Learned basic HTML skills to code and develop special projects for longer form, energy-intensive stories.
Worked with different colleges and universities to teach media literacy. Created content for different social media platforms to share media literacy tips. Organized trainings with the program director. Searched for misinformation to debunk. Taught media literacy on my campus by working with different professors.
Worked on four cultural competence guides over the course of four semesters. Served as a producer on a cultural competence guide focusing on the religiously unaffiliated, and one about The Black Church and created all graphics and charts for the guides. Helped write and answer questions about members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and their beliefs.
Managed team of reporters in an editing role while updating different social media platforms. Served as the Campus Desk Editor and Audience Engagement Editor. Wrote a daily newsletter.
Reported five semesters. Was the primary reporter during Michigan State University’s provost search. Reporting contributions spanned from the previous provost’s resignation to the new provost’s appointment. Contributed to two of the three most-read articles of the 2019-2021 school year with over 109,000 page views combined. Covered MSU’s administration during the transition to a new president while other new administration members cycle in, COVID-19 updates, city and campus events.
Covered the women and politics beat in the greater Lansing area for the Spartan Newsroom. Helped develop an award-winning system for comparing the sources we use in reporting on the demographic and political makeup in communities. The project won a 2019-2020 MSU-AT&T award for use of technology in teaching. Continued remote coverage after the COVID-19 outbreak.
